Townsend Advocates Recognize Domestic Violence Victims at Area Park

On Thursday, October 7th, Soroptimist members and local domestic violence advocates met at the Water Tower Park to recognize domestic violence and sexual assault victims over the past six years in Broadwater County. This was done in observance of National Domestic Awareness Month.

Local Soroptimists created flags for each of the domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Broadwater County over the past six years. The purple flags represent domestic violence and the teal flags symbolize for sexual assault.

According to Brooke Dolan, Victim’s Witness Advocate for the county, 134 domestic violence victims and 21 sexual assault victims have either reported abuse or filed an order of protection with her office since 1998. Last year alone, we had 37 cases of domestic violence and 5 cases of sexual assault, an increase of almost 40 percent and 30 percent, respectively, over the previous five years combined.

Townsend’s Soroptimist Club of Crimson Bluffs is a non-profit organization. The group meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:15 p.m. at Broadwater Health Center in the conference room on the second floor. For more about Soroptimist International, visit their website at www.soroptimist.org.
